tsr = terminal stay resident "old dos term" .. im talking about programs running in the background that hog system resources ie: cpu power and ram etc

Yeah, there are lots of programs that have this functionality. I used to use a good one called Cunning Fox for my Mac. Since I'm using a PC for now, I use Procexp, which displays all open processes with detailed information on what they are and how much cpu they're using. You can temporarily suspend (which I use), end, and restart processes from there too. It's a nice system usage utility with a real-time cpu usage graph too.

I like the ASO(Advanced System Optimizer)http://www.systweak.com.
It's a multi purpose program spyware scan, junk files scan, registry scan and defrag. It will also let you select which games you want to play optimized which like you guys said closes all background programs.
Also I know AMD has a similar program (Overdrive I think) but that only works if your running AMD. :_coffee:

usually multi purpose programs are not very good you want a program to do 1 thing only and to do it well so get programs that mainly do 1 thing they work better cause they focus on doing that task that said they are good multipurpose programs but you shouldnt use all the programs in them. I repair computers and i use TuneUp utilities for tweaking and optimizing the older program is better the newer one sucks as it loads services in the background you want less things running! so i recommend the 2007 to 2009 versions but i dont use the defrag utility in it! for the fastest defrag and small program I highly recommend Vopt from golden bow It will defrag big harddrives in 3 minutes (about 120 to 250gbs) but you must use it daily! and of course pation your drives for an even faster boost as for the cleaner WEbroot window washer and Cleaner the 2 best but even better is if the program is free! here is a link to a good website for win 7 and vista programs for free!
