Enemy Territory uses a global unique identifier (GUID) to identify players. This is a code, which is generated from the CD key. Since ET is a free game and comes without any CD key, a different GUID is generated automatically each time you install the game.

On many servers, the GUID is used to identify players to set their admin level. Also some servers (like ours) have a minimum age restriction for GUIDs to prevent players with a newly generated GUID from joining the server.

The etkey file stores the GUID as well as the time when it was created. If you ever lose your etkey file (due to a hard disk crash or an ET re-installation), you will lose your admin levels on the servers you had been registered with,
The etkey file can be located in the Wolfenstein - Enemy Territory/etmain folder. For registered forum users, we added an etkey backup service. Here you can upload your etkey and download it again when you have lost it for some reasons.

The etkey file contains your GUID, you should not give it out to anyone you don't trust. Players who use it have access to your admin levels. Also bans are based on this GUID, so if anyone uses your etkey for cheating and gets busted, you will get banned, too.
*WF* will not use your etkey file in any other way than creating the backup for you. You can delete your etkey file from the repository any time.

Punkbuster tracks peoples GUID's and when a player gets banned it bans their GUID so they cannot just change names and re-enter the server.
Ok finally a post to explain a guid...
Firstly to be on a WF server and to check if everyone has a guid type in the console which can be accessed by pressing(~) then type !listplayers (ENTER) This will show everyone's guid and if they don't have one it will come up in the middle as (*)

Ok a GUID is basically your etkey/pb... If you notice some ppl in that screenie(screenshot taken by upr above this post), Their guid is (*) This means that they don't have a GUID(etkey) or that their pb is not enabled... And the reason we need to have ppl have their pb turned on is becoz it prevents aimbot hacks and wallhacks.. And they can also get a H*S admin level!

And also if people have leaked guids say an admin, Or the admin was set without pb enabled, These ppl can get their (that admins)username and admin level just for not having a guid.. If you notice a person without a guid and they have an admin level even if they are lvl 1 try this: (from R+D) Type !setlevel [noguidplayerhere] 0 (ENTER). This will make them level 0.

Also if they don't have a guid try tell them to type in console /pb_cl_enable (ENTER). This basically is the command to enable their pb... Although sometimes it doesn't work. And if that is the case i would assume it means they don't have a etkey.... Now an etkey is basically what it says it is... A etkey is like a key to the xpsave account (a key to your online xpsave account)that you have, It remembers your xp and admin, If you happen to lose this etkey or type in console !resetmyxp then your etkey will be cleared and you will have no xp left... And if you lose your etkey thats basically your admin levels gone too...

Your etkey is basically everything and every1's etkey is different so if u copy ur etkey and give it to sum1 else then... They will have your guid id and your xp and your admin level(soo never give your etkey out to anyone...). And in a lot of cases if someone gets ur etkey if one of you connects to a server the other person cannot connect to that server at the same time or the first one that connected will get autokick(probally say guid spoofing is reason of kick)This is because its trying to open 2 etkey accounts for the same person twice even though their is one account... So don't have the same guid on 2 of your pc's.

Also if you don't have an etkey and type in console /pb_cdkeyreg this is suppose to get you a etkey.. But lately i have noticed this doesn't seem to work.. I tested this myself put my etkey on a usb and tried our server and did the /pb_cdkeyreg and i couldnt ge it.. i even joined a pb server and i still couldnt get it...?


IF PEOPLE HAVE NO GUID WE CANNOT BAN THEM BECAUSE IT BANS ALL PPL WITHOUT NO GUID AND IF ONE OF THEM GETS A GUID THEN TRIES OUR SERVER THEY COULD STILL BE BANNED.

I SUGGEST EVERY WFER MEMBER THAT CAN DO !listplayers DO IT ONCE THEY JOIN A WF SERVERS,AND REMIND PEOPLE TO GET GUIDS.

2) Backup your etkey file on a storage like an USB Key :

You can extract the compressed .zip files and watch the Readme!.txt

After you should copy it on an a storage like an usb key for example.

It is important if you do not want to lose your Levels and your xp !
